Unit 4: Assessing Viability of Initial idea

My other audience/ client (teacher) feedback

When presenting my main chosen idea that was about the objectification of women, at the beginning of the planning process, my audience feedback was that I had to be more specific with my idea, make it viable and realistic, choose one ideas that I am interested in and make it appealing to my target audience.
My audience/ client feedback was:

’’To choose an ideas that is a gap in the market but it should be current’’
’’ To make it even more appealing to you target audience as they will be the ones that the documentary is going to be focused at.’’
’’What am I trying to investigate which will establish the documentary’’.
’’Your idea sounds plain, try to be even more specific and talk about it in elaborated analysis’’.

Clarifying my chosen idea

Idea:
Locations and Access:
Would this be filmed mainly in school with students?
Gap in the Market:
Are there other factual programmes about this issue?
Duration:
Could this idea be explored in just 5 minutes?
Audience:
Would this be appealing to a teenage audience?
My documentary is about the objectification of women and excessive nude scenes in music videos.
Main question asked throughout the documentary to all interviewees is whether it is right or wrong to have certificates on music videos?

How far can they go on the idea of censoring what we see?

(E.g. if smoking appears on a music videos it can be rated as 18).
No it won’t because my documentary will be filmed in a recording company or shopping centre or a youth club.
No because the objectification of women is not highlighted in the media a lot as sex and women wearing revealing clothing is the only way they can earn money and it attract their audiences from all ages and backgrounds.

The USP is that it is made by a young person for young person about sex in the mass media.
Yes by just investigating how it has an influence on young people physically, emotionally, intellectually and socially.
Yes because it sheds light on the excessive amounts of sexually explicit music videos there are mainly on YouTube.

My target audience would like to see some examples of my chosen YouTube music videos.

Unit 4: Pre-Production Paperwork- Practice editing/interviews and filming techniques/sound

Test interview with Keera who is my unsigned artist for my documentary.

Strengths:

-My interviewee was an excellent speaker when I did my test Vox Pops.

- What my interviewee was wearing conveyed the right message, which I expected and wanted from my interviewee to send the message to my target audience.

The conversation of the interviewee and interviewer sounds relevant, appealing and interesting.
Weaknesses:

-          The mise-en-scene wasn’t relevant or didn’t contain any props that was appealing to my target audience and that could indicate that the location was in a studio.

-          There were lots of background noises
-          My questions that I was asking my interviewee were almost similar.
-          The interviewee was looking and talking directly towards the camera.
-          The questions that I have asked were not informed to the viewers.
Opportunities:

-          From talking to her, it turned out that she had a studio, which I can use to film for my documentary for the relevant location.

-          As it was too busy when I filmed Keira, I can go another day and film her when it’s in the morning and less people are in the building.

-          This will also reduce background noise, distractions or interruptions, as it will be less loud during this time of day.

-          I was experiencing time limitations when I filmed Keira as it were getting darker and we were in a rush, which effected my lighting as I was filming. Therefore, my next interview with her will be arranged when there is enough time for us available to produce the interview.
Threats:

-          The location was full of teenagers, which meant it was very busy in the Tooting Hub but as a threat it was impossible to tell them all to leave the building.

-          The lighting of the building wasn’t too bright and it was high up in the ceiling, so I couldn’t really control the lighting.

-          It was also out of my control to book more appointment or earlier appointment with Keira to film somewhere where I wanted and a time that was suitable for me.

Before conducting an interview with Keira on the 18th November, I went to the Tooting Hub to meet her again but she cancelled our meeting as she got caught up by other things. I did consider something alternative that I wanted to film another person, which was Keira’s colleague and who did the same job as Keira but he was a male, so I left the Tooting Hub empty-handed.

I conducted a test interview with Keira on the 25th November 2011 at 5.00 p.m. in the Tooting Hub, where Keira works alongside youth workers with young people. The problem was that I didn’t know that Keira had a studio where she produces her music videos. As a solution I interviewed Keira in an office where it looks like as if she is sitting next to her music equipments. However, this was the weakness part of my test interview, which I have discovered ones I filmed her. Another solution was that I talked to Keira about where I want to film her in a location that was more appealing, suitable and relevant to my target audience.  Therefore, she informed me that she had a music studio where we could film her for my real structured interview with her.

After I did my test interview with Keira, I texted her again whether I could interview her this time for real and with everything organized but she couldn’t because she had family difficulties and personal things occurred, which made me consider filming someone else instead of Keira. As I cannot plead her to participate in my documentary.

If Keira does not want to participate in my music videos, my other options are that I could film young female girls who are considering to go into the music industry and who are prepared to do anything for the director or producers to establish an appealing and attractive music video for its target audience.
