The mode of address are serious, critical and investigative.
This documentary is investigative because Panorama was trying to find out whether the care home was promoting all the policies, procedures and anti-discriminatory practice?
Panorama’s investigation inside a residential care home, known as Winterbourne View care home, where it investigates the hidden abuse, neglect, bullying, mocking and harassment experienced by the severely disabled service users.
The reason why it is an investigative documentary is because it explores about the despicable incompetent practice of the care workers towards the patients. The discovery is about wether it is really happening or not? And how serious the neglect and abuse is for other authorities to interfere and close the Winterbourne View care home.
The documentary contained concealed video camera footage and daily recorded videos made by the participatory who worked alongside Panorama in the investigation as a care worker in the Winterbourne View. Secondly, the fact that the mode of address is serious is because the documentary is dealing with a serious and illegal subject matter that is publishing it to the world of how vulnerable people are being exploited and used for entertainment or pleasure.
Obviously, this types of topics must be taken serious and not tolerated by the government or other people in power.
Finally, the reason why this documentary is critical is because it criticizes about the inadequate practice of the members of staff working in the care home.
The target audience of the Panorama documentary is men and females aged 19+ from any ethnic backgrounds as it primarily highlights abuse and neglect behind closed doors so it would be relevant to anyone from any class. It raises awareness of the incompetency and unprofessional practice by the care practitioners in the Winterbourne View. Hereby, other care practitioners would be aware of their practice and reflect to the documentary. The documentary sheds light on the vulnerability and dependency of the service users on the care workers. It emphasizes that health and social care setting must promote better practice, meet patients’ needs, respect and dignify them.
The Mode of Panorama documentary about a care home is investigatory, participatory as the journalist who went undercover as a care worker to secretly film all the abuse and neglect that was occurring every day by the hands of the individuals who called themselves ’care workers’. Joe Casey who was the undercover presenter had three secret cameras and a daily video diary where he expressed his feelings after he had seen the high levels of abuse.
The conventions of the Panorama documentary are that it is non-fictional and it is documenting an aspect of reality. It also uses voice over narration, expert opinions from professionals who know how to work with disabled patients without the use of abuse or restraints, deep focus on the subject matter which is Winterbourne View and the excessive levels of abuse and neglect, location shooting where we’re shown the undercover videos filmed secretly for evidence and realism, cutaways that are all linked to the patients being abused and neglected, long takes dominate of the shots for proper view of what is exactly happening to the patients by the unqualified and ignorant care workers. The Panorama documentary emphasizes on physical assaults, systematic brutality and torture experienced by the patients who do not have a voice to raise their voice.
