Unit 4 Post 3 examples and discuss below the 'mode of address' of each one.

1) My first example is The Only Way To Essex, which is a docu-soap and a dramatic TV program because it consists of arguments, conflicts between relationships and issues between the character in the soap.
However, the soap consists of characters who are in modified situations saying unscripted lines but put into a structured way.
The docu-soap is usually part of a series of programmes, which feature an institution through a set of characters that appear each week.

The mode of address of the above docu-soap is light hearted and critical.
The reason why they are light hearted is because it explores the lives of young, posh and middle class people who are living the lives of celebrities but convey it in a positive, cheerful and humorous way. It does contain gossips and critical judgments, which makes the docu-soap critical.

The target audience of The Only Way To Essex is young people aged 19-30 mainly females who are from a middle class background, primarily from White ethnicity.

The hobbies and interests of its target audience is that they are shopaholics, loves partying, engaging in intimate relationships, drinking alcohol, clubbing, going out with friends and spending lots of money. They are fashionable and spoiled.

They are more likely to go regularly on holidays to places such as Thailand or places where there is beaches and sun bathing for tanning.

The target audience is also in favour of plastic surgeries as the characters have liposuction done on the significant parts of their bodies such as lips, breast and bums. This is a target audience that is obsessed with their appearance and they have regular sexual intercourse.

The target audience is more likely to be working in expensive bars. They come from affluent families with wealthy possessions. For instance, these include vehicles, properties, business that they own and celebrity occupation such as singers, musicians and modeling.

2) My second example is of a mockumentary known as 'The Majestic Plastic Bag’. It is produced by an Academy Award-winner Jeremy Irons. It is about the reality of California's plastic bag pollution situation.
It is basically, a mockumentary to promote its campaign for keeping the ocean unpolluted and clean away from garbage and plastic bags.

It’s mode of address is light hearted, investigative and optimistic.
Firstly, the reason why it is light heart is mainly because it is a documentary about plastic bags, which creates an impression that the documentary is exploring an issue that is not too serious but it is instead humour and light hearted.

The reason why this mockumentary is investigative is because it has researched about plastic bags to produce a successful mockumentry. It also explores about the life cycle of the plastic bags.

At last, the reason why it is optimistic is because it ends with a positive conclusion and that with the help of the viewers there will be less plastic pollution.
The mockumentary is produced in a very professional and serious way with an authoritative narrator voice over and relevant cutaways. The plastic bag is referred to as a creature, which denotes as if the documentary producer is talking about an animal or a living thing that really lives on this earth. This technique creates more atmospheres and makes the viewers really belief that plastic bags are a real issue.

The fact that it is mocking plastic bags makes the mockumentary humorous and memorable for the viewers.

The conventions of the mockumetary are that it is depicting an aspect of reality. It is a non-fiction mockumentary, it is deep focused with cutaways.

Its target audience is adults aged 20-30 males and females who care about their environment and want to keep it safe and healthy. This mockumentary is for people who live in California and who want to help reduce the plastic pollution situations.
I think it is mainly for all ethnic background and social class who want to make the effort to help and the ’Heal The Bay’ campaign.

3) At last, my third example is Super Nanny as a participatory documentary. The reason why it is participatory is because the presenter is taking part in the documentary and is taking the viewers throughout the show to family households with children who are badly behaved. It shows the viewers how to nurture and socialize children through disciplinary activities or lessons for the parents, their children, for the target audience and/or viewers to learn how to teach the morals the best way.

The mode of address is serious, critical, light hearted and optimistic.

The reason why the mode of address is serious is mainly because as the Super Nanny is dealing with children who are badly behaving and young. Seriousness is the key to teaching them what is right or wrong or else they won’t listen.  Likewise, it is serious so that parents who socialize their bad habits to their children change their personality and characteristics too.
In addition, as it is an adult show mainly for parents to be good parents without the use of coercion or swearing. Therefore, the serious mode of address creates more realism and intensifies the emotions between a child and a parent.
Secondly, the reason why it is light hearted is because the documentary is combined with seriousness and humour so that it is interesting, positive and appealing for children too with their parents.
Thirdly, the reason why the documentary is optimistic is because it concludes at the end with the children very well behaved than at the beginning of the show. This mode of address indicates that despite many children being badly behaved they can become through well teaching and discipline good boys and girls. It provides options for parents who think their children are never going to change and they will live in misery forever. It provides parents with new strategies and methods to effective disciplining.
Its specific target audience is adults aged 25- 40+ who are parent and may have more than one child. They are from a wide multi-ethnicity and working class.
The interest and hobbies of the target audience are family gathering, shopping for the children, travelling abroad or in UK, cooking, cleaning, sports such as jogging or cycling, driving and socializing with colleagues or family members.
The parents of the children are more likely to be employed and work for long hours, which mean they will be lacking in time to be able to discipline the children properly.
The target audience music favourite are various starting from Classic, Hip Hop, Pop or Opera.
The conventions of Super Nanny are that it’s documenting a topic in reality, its non-fiction, it’s focusing on a deep topic, and it does have cutaways and consists of expert opinions, which are mainly the Nanny’s opinions as a professional.
