To produce an effective and appealing documentary, I have to first come up with 3 key ideas.
Idea Number One
One of my ideas is that I want to make a documentary that explores the lives of young people living in the UK.
Perhaps I could also investigate the real truth of why young people would have participated in the summer 2011 riots and looting?
My aim will be to try to find out the real truth behind their actions and choices that they make in their lives. This can be positive or negative choice.
My aim will be to try to find out the real truth behind their actions and choices that they make in their lives. This can be positive or negative choice.
Subject matter: the challenges of adolescence
But because it is such as broad topic I have chosen one aspect of teenage lives that I will be discussing about in depth.
Factors relating to young people: Teenage pregnancy, cutting, self-esteem, love, sex, drugs, education, family, socio-economic, friends (peer groups), gangs, attitude, respect, manners and behaviour, relationships, health, unemployment/ employment.
I believe that there is a ‘gap’ in the market for informing, educating, raising awareness, persuading and advising or convincing teenagers to positive, skilful and beneficial pathways in the media industry. In addition, this way we can also explore the lives of teenagers from their point of view.
Interviews/ interviewees: I would like to interview teenagers, teachers, parents, Youth workers.
Target audience: Teenagers
Mode is the type of documentary: investigative, participatory?.
Mode Address is the tone/style (sound) of the documentary: serious, investigative but at the same time light hearted and optimistic. As it will/ or I might try to point out some strategies for teenage lives of how to solve obstacles.
Conventions of the medium: non- fiction, archive footage, documenting an aspect of reality, voice over narration, expert opinion, and cutaways with voice over.
I think this documentary is viable yet also informative.
Purpose: is to acknowledge to the viewers that teenage lives are very complex and painful. Therefore, people who are critical and judgemental must understand and sympathy rather than judge instantly.
Length: 5 min.
Distribution: I would like to broadcast my documentary on ITV 1 and ITV2 or any other channels, which young people often look at such as BBCTHREE
Relevant websites:
This idea is similar to my other ideas because all three of them are educational, informative, appeals to a young teenage target audience and it’s investigative.
I could do this by asking qualitative questions to gain a broad understanding of teenagers physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially.
SWOT for idea 1
Strengths
- The strengths for my idea one is this documentary will be a unique and exciting but interesting TV Programme that will mainly be about young people and every single aspects around them, starting from their stereotypes, education, family, friends, peer groups, health, life obstacles and many more.
- Another strength is that there this documentary is based on teenagers for the first time I suppose.
- Thirdly, the viewers will get the chance to learn and know about young people even more. It may/will even substitute their opinions or thoughts about typical young people who often represent all teenagers as a whole.
|
Weaknesses
- Many young people aren’t really respectful or express their feelings about certain things such as being interviewed in a rather negative approach.
- But, I had to choose a specific topic for the documentaries as I can’t do every single aspect about teenagers because that would be too broad. So I decide to do a documentary about the self concept of teenagers. In other words, how they see themselves when they look in the mirror.
- It may not be as interesting as it sounds for the viewers.
- At last, it may raise critical opinions or controversy about young people’s personal lives because self concept of a young person can be either negative or positive and making that public to the viewers may not be appropriate.
|
Opportunities
- For this idea I will get the chance to investigate the real truth behind closed doors. As I will be interviewing many young people, their voices and opinions will be heard thoroughly by everyone about how they see themselves in the mirror in many ways. This could be a way of changing the services that is not provided or is provided to young people by those who have the power in their hands such as David Cameron.
- I will be able to find or research many archive information about young people on internet or other media resources.
|
Threats
- The threats or problems could be that not much teenagers would like to talk about their how they see themselves as it is a personal topic.
- The documentary would be too boring for those who really don’t want to know about teenagers and their lives as it may not be interesting enough for them.
- I might not be able to take forward or develop my ideas more in depth as it might become gradually too personal about the lives of young people.
- Young people may not want to get interviewed.
- Usually young people are found in collages or school so I will have to find them during their breaks or periods off as I don’t want to disturb their daily routine.
|
The use of sound tracks or music will create more emotions or understanding of what you mean in you documentary.
Idea Number Two
Secondly, my other idea is to investigate whether cosmetic products bring any serious harm to us, as human beings such as lipsticks, foundations, mascaras.
What will happen if we slept with make up? Does girls with a lots of cosmetics have a label in them? Or are they seen as ‘bad girls’. The answers or opinions may vary from person to person and from culture to culture.
Subject matter: Can Cosmestic Products Harm Us?
Interviews/ interviewees: I will be interviewing mainly girls but also boys. At the same time, I will also interview parents having to buy cosmetics for their children, asking for their opinion about it. Critisms, controversy.
I think this documentary is viable because I will be able perhaps go to a cosmetics store, or company to see how they are made, does it have any bad influence on people who wears make up, how much profit the industries make. Investigating from dermatalogists the side effects of cosmetics and their expert views about cosmetics.
Target audience: Teenagers
Mode is the type of documentary: investigative, perhaps participatory.
Mode Address is the tone/style (sound) of the documentary: serious because the topic about cosmetic misuse or misleads could potentially harm or have a big influence on young skin.
Conventions of the medium: non- fiction, documenting an aspect of reality. Archive footages, Cutaways with voice overs, expert opinion from dermatalogists
Purpose: Cosmetic products are produced and sold across the world but my purpose or aim is to find out whether this really is useful, will/ does it harm our skin.
Length: 5 min.
Distribution: Again this should be published in any channel that is most watched by young people such as ITV1, ITV2, BBCTHREE OR CHANNEL 4
SWOT for Idea 2
Strengths
- It is a very interesting topic as it will mainly be a purposeful documentary for women acknowledging to them the side effects of cosmetics, how cosmetics are made and many more.
- This documentary will create a biased opinion mainly saying that using too much cosmetics or sleeping with cosmetics will cause serious side effects.
- There will be lots of people to interview. For example, interviewing lots of young females in a shopping centre near a cosmetics store.
- Cosmetics are used and produced worldwide in different formats, tastes, colours and so forth so the topic can be easily developed or changed if needed to.
|
Weaknesses
- It is better to have a polarized opinion about the topic that is being discussed as it will appeal to many females with different opinions about cosmetics.
- It is a topic which may be interested only to women but only to some men.
- My documentary may be criticized or cause conflicts as it is, basically, saying don’t use a lot of cosmetic for your own good. Certain individuals may take it serious and misunderstand my meaning of choosing to do this idea about cosmetics.
|
Opportunities
- Get the opportunity to visit a cosmetics industry and investigate properly how cosmetics are made and what the ingredients are that may cause harm to us, females, as human beings. For example, the negative side effects it may show now or in future.
- I will get the opportunity to learn in depth about lots of different cosmetic industries.
- I will be able to interview individuals with expert opinions, yet also, personal opinions
|
Threats
- I may not get authorized access to the cosmetic industries. As owners of these sorts of companies may not want to lose profit by me filming how they make cosmetics as they don’t care about the side effects to it, instead they care about the money they make from it.
- Many cosmetic industries may lose profit because of my documentary.
|
Idea Number Three
For my third idea, I would like to know more about the reason to why music videos are exposing women’s body in an excessive revealing way. Making them appear more like sex objects instead of representing them formally, with dignity and respectfully. Yet also, there is in music video a lots of sexual attraction emphasised. For example, many music videos contains a lot of nudity and sexual intercourse. My documentary will then be about how all of this could have a negative impact on the younger generation in many forms such as physically, emotionally, intellectually and socially.
Subject matter: The objectification of women by the media.
Interviews/ interviewees: I will mainly be interviewing teenagers investigating how it has influenced them, interviewing teachers to investigate whether it has any impact on the young people’s education, family life, dress codes, behaviour, attitude or manners towards certain things or people, peer groups, has it created any culture within young people?
Target audience: Adolescence aged 16-19, boys and girls.
Mode: investigative
Mode of address: serious, critical and investigative.
Conventions of the medium: Documenting an aspect of reality, cutaways, archive footage with voice over.
Purpose: The purpose of this documentary would be to raise awareness of the impact it could have on young people’s mind and social life. Yet also, it informs to young people the negative influence it has on them by seeing these music videos.
Length: 5 min.
Distribution: E4, BBC THREE, ITV1, ITV2.
SWOT for
Idea 3
Strengths
- The strength of my last idea is that it is a serious issue around the world.
- It will show a biased opinion about the objectification of women mainly emphasizing the idea that it is unacceptable that women in this world are seen as sex objects.
- It is a good, solid but interesting topic which will appeal to a unisex target audience.
|
Weaknesses
-It may be quite hard to start off with this idea as it is their main source to attract the male or sometimes female audience. What else should they do to attract males for certain media purposes like music videos?
- People may not want to be on the camera for personal reasons.
|
Opportunities
- This may be my one in a million opportunity to make a change to how women are objectified by the media.
- Secondly, I will get the opportunity to visit well known companies that are continuing with the objectification of women when producing their programmes to make it more appealing for the male audience.
- The documentary will give me the chance to learn more about the real lives of the females that are being used to represent women as a whole.
- I will get the chance to met lots of different types of people which may be seen by some good or bad.
- Fifthly, I have got the opportunity to be a professional presenter by producing an ‘AWARD WINNING DOCUMENTARY’.
- Sixthly, I have got the chance to educate or acknowledge to the viewers mainly the male audience that it is not acceptable for women to be treated this way.
- Finally, I will get the chance to obtain expert opinions about this topic.
|
Threats
- It may not be suitable for children or younger viewers.
- It may raise many critical opinions as some men enjoys seeing women naked or revealing clothing for them.
- The documentary may be disturbing or contain inappropriate scenes for some viewers.
- My target audience or viewers may not watch it as they prefer the way the media objectifies women. They may not be bothered with it.
- Certain individuals may get aggressive or it may be too dangerous for me to interview them.
- I may not get the chance to interview companies or certain individuals who are in power of producing these sorts of videos where it constantly objectifies women.
