Unit 4: Pre-Production Paperwork - Practice editing/interview and filming techniques/ sound

The above video footage is an experimental interview about teenage pregnancy. The interviewee is talking to the interviewer directly without looking into the camera. I learned the techniques and skills I need to have for interviewing someone professionally and tactfully. For instance, I worked together with a counterpart and set up the interview together by organizing a suitable location and interviewee. We considered cross cutting and talking space. Most importantly, we also considered sound, lighting, mis-en-scene, props and the shot of the camera angle.

Hereby, we became skilled during the Unit 4 experimental interviews and tests, yet also, this prepared me for Unit 5s' real interviews.  Through practicing and learning form my mistakes I became more confident in being able to conduct effective and professional interviews with important interviewees. For instance, I am planning to interview Mr. Sadiq Khan, who is an important person interviewee as he has got many responsibilities he will only give me one chance to interview him.

Unit 4: Practice interview

The above video is an experimental bad interview that we have conducted as a team to acknowledge our weaknesses during a Vox Pop interview with a member of the public. I learned through making mistakes what is right or wrong when it comes to interviews. For instance, having good framing with an appropriate mis-en-scene and props.

This is another experimental interview that is a good interview and that we have considered all the key features, which a professional interview consists of.  For instance, the test interview that we have completed puts a lot of emphasis on the key techniques we should use in our real interviews. For Unit 4 I did my best to learn in a more advanced level how to film  interviews, Vox Pops and Focus Groups in a skilled manner.

Unit 4: Research and Development for Media Production - Analysis of past students work/ Commentary

Script for commentary: ''Hey my name is Maryam Latifi and my job is to analyse the following documentary on video games addictions, as a commentator. I will be talking about 5 or more key points of how to improve the mistakes that has been made while producing the documentary.

The five or more improvements for the video are:

- That the voice over of the male narrator can’t be understood properly so it requires some sound improvements. (E.g. the distance or frequency of the sound levels must be considered at all times during a voice over).  At the same time when the voice over starts, the background noise of the video game that is being played begins as well. This collision of sounds makes it hard for the viewers to understand what the voice over of a narrator is saying.

- It is very important to have the correct sound tracks for the right subject matter as this documentary was lacking. The documentary has an irrelevant sound track on the background while there was a voice over playing. This could be improved by allowing the voice over to tune above the background noise as it will make the voice over more understandable.

- As you can see from the documentary, the caption is not eye catching and it’s too basic for a documentary.  The producer could have used the edits on Imovie to change the font of the caption so it is more interesting and appeals to its target audience.

- There isn’t any effective intro and outro for the documentary as viewer can not exactly tell where the beginning or the end is in the documentary.  That’s why it is important for the producer that he should included the intro and outro in the documentary for clearer understanding of the purpose of the documentary.

- In addition, the documentary has got an excessive amount of archive footages from a video game that’s played almost throughout the documentary.  A good tactic would be to records real life scenes to create that sense of realism and interest for the viewers in the documentary. For example, the producer could have asked a real psychiatrist for his expert opinion about the short and long term side effects of video games particularly on young boys.

- Yet also, this documentary about video games had too many black scenes which really looked inappropriate and unnecessary. It is important to mention that while producing a documentary there shouldn’t be any blank scene where it creates confusion for the viewers and it looks thoroughly unprofessional.

To add, the mise en scene look unsuitable for the interviewing part of the documentary as the wall behind the interviewee is broken. For improvements the producer should changed the setting where the interview takes place. For example, they could have moved the chair somewhere else.

- The shot composition could be improved by having a proper long and full shot of the interviewee without having a part of his head cut of in the screen.

- It is often seen as a professional tactic for the interviewee to not look straight into the camera during a conversation with the interviewer.

That’s for now guys but I will come back for more critical comments and how to improve them next week.

Thank you very much for listening!''.
